Welcome to the WILD family! Here I will be sharing snippets of the people, activities, updates and more from Costa Rica. To begin, I would like to share with you a glimpse into my daily life living in Costa Rica.
I live in the northern part of Santa Teresa, in front of one of the heavier surf breaks, called La Lora. Every morning, I wake up with a cup of coffee made with local beans from Tarrazu, Costa Rica. I add coconut milk and head down to the beach with my Australian Labradoodle, Bodhi, for a wave check. The gentle beach walk in the morning is my favorite way to start the day. Even better when I wake up naturally with daybreak around 5:30AM. The Howler Monkeys also start their chorus at first light, if you’re lucky enough to have them in your yard.
Depending on the surf conditions, I’ll head back to the house to grab my board or practice yoga if it doesn’t look like ideal waves (I’m spoiled by the choice!). I love surfing my local break because there are so many familiar faces in the water and a deep sense of community and pura vida. I return mid-morning for a shower, fresh pipa and oats with local fruit (papaya, mango, starfruit, guanabana). Pipas are a natural source of electrolytes that I source raw, open with a machete and drink the coconut water to boost my hydration. I try to take all of my meals from a hammock, particularly breakfast, to start the day off in a grounding way in nature. I often watch the monkeys above me eating mangoes from the tree branches.
Once I feel properly exercised, fed and showered, I sit down in front of my computer. Yes, in the middle of the jungle! I connect with technology, as I imagine many of you reading also do. Okay, sometimes I’m in a hammock for the technology part too! Similar to you perhaps, I respond to emails, connect with clients and put out fires. At midday, I’ll meet up with friends for lunch, walk on the beach, read a book or run errands in town. If I’m lucky, I’ll squeeze in a midday surf. It’s important for me to take this midday break for both my mental and physical health. In the early afternoon, I may be welcoming clients into their villa or preparing for the following day’s activities.
Sunset is a meaningful event, marking the end of the day with a beautiful canvas of sorbet-colored sky and clouds. If I’m not in the water, I typically meet up with friends for a beach walk. You’ll find people on the beach with picnics, playing volleyball or soccer, watching the surfers and more. It’s a beautiful tradition that I value and observe on a daily basis. When it gets dark around 6PM, I return home, Bodhi in tow, and prepare for dinner in or out of the house.
If this were a high school yearbook, I would likely write, Never Seen Without: Bodhi (dog), Klean Canteen (try to avoid plastic and stay hydrated), hat or zinc (sometimes both), Fu Wax (tropical) and no shoes (it’s grounding and less hassle)!
Santa Teresa has so many opportunities for adventure and night life and this is just an example of a typical day for me.
